GERMANIC & EUROPEAN HISTORY

Living in Germany allowed me access to museums and research that I never knew about when I was in the United States. From these sources, I wrote my interpretation of the history of Europe and Germania from BC to the 19th Century. How does it differ from what you were taught in school?

The first historical entry about the Alamanni occurs in AD 213, when Emperor Caracalla battled against them in an area between the upper Rhine and upper Danube rivers. The Alamanni homeland was in southern Germany and was highland country. Alamanni means "All Men." This might mean that the group was actually a confederacy of several un-named tribes. They may have come from a combination of the Hermunduri and Suebi since that area of Germany was formerly those group's old tribal lands. The Alamanni were always farmers first, and warriors second. Even so, the Alamanni overran the Roman border fortifications and settled the Black Forest area that the Romans gave up around 250 AD.
