St. Simons Island, GA is one of Georgia’s largest barrier islands. First inhabited by the Native Americans of the Muskogee Tribe, St. Simons was occupied by Spanish monks during the late 1500’s. The first English settlers arrived in 1735 and began construction of the fort and town of Frederica under the direction of General James Oglethorpe. Frederica became a major settlement due both to its strategic location and the abundance of game and open areas for cultivation. With the treaty signed between the English and Spanish in 1748, the troops were withdrawn from Frederica and the fortifications began to fall into decay.
